The E90 generation was the first to use BMW's electric water pump and electronic thermostat. Both components have high failure rates, typically between 60,000-100,000 miles. When the water pump fails, there is no warning - the engine can overheat rapidly. The pump may also become noisy before complete failure. These are considered wear items requiring proactive replacement.

Oil Leaks (Valve Cover and Oil Filter Housing)

The E90's N52 and N5x engines develop oil leaks as they age. The valve cover gasket is a very common leak point due to the plastic valve cover warping from heat. High Pressure Fuel Pump Failure (N54/N55)

The N54 and early N55 engines use a mechanical high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) driven by the intake camshaft. Early versions were prone to failure, causing drivability issues or complete stalling. BMW extended warranty coverage on early pumps. Later revisions improved reliability.
